HEALTH
A Broad Perspective – From Disease to Health and Healing

Welcome to Session II of the 2010 Leadership America Program. Leadership America is based on the premise that an informed and knowledgeable leader is a competent leader. The Carter Center will serve as the backdrop for 2010 Leadership America’s focus on health and health-related concerns and issues. Atlanta is the home of the internationally renowned Center for Disease Control, The Carter Center, applauded for its international health initiatives, world-class medical and nursing schools. The city is also headquarters for national and international health and health care affiliated organizations.

The current shift occurring within the “health” system recognizes health is a state of physical, mental and spiritual well-being more than the absence of disease. The Leadership America agenda will address this preventative mode of thinking and its potential impact on the nation’s economy, including the bottom-line for small businesses and major corporations. In addition, the agenda will take a look at the refocusing and reframing of the nation’s health policy debate.

The session will feature conversations with leaders in a broad spectrum of health-related fields including physicians, scientists, medical researchers, clergy, and health-affiliated nonprofits addressing the various complexities of health issues – with emphasis on shifting resources to prevention. The drivers of premature and preventable mortality; marginal performance of the U.S. measured by our life-expectancy and health status ranking in the world; growing disparities in health outcomes measured by race and socio-economic status; and, the implications of our individual actions and decisions regarding our personal health and these implications for our families, our communities, businesses, locally and globally, will be among the topics of conversation.

In addition, the participants will have opportunity to discuss the ramifications of current economic factors on our nation’s health debate with economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Session II will conclude with an interactive workshop focusing on the responsibility of women leaders from every professional discipline to participate in the nation’s health debate. The leaders will learn the needed skills/tools, harness the power of collaboration, and bring their passions, brains, and backgrounds to the arenas where matters of health are being discussed.
